NASA - Mars Panorama

On July 4, 1997 Pathfinder landed on Mars. (Before that, the last time we were on Mars was in 1976 with the Viking lander.) One of the things Pathfinder did while it was on Mars was to take the above 360 degree panoramic picture of the surrounding Martian terrain. JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) called us to create a virtual reality version of the panoramic image that the Pathfinder captured.

Eons ago, when water flowed on Mars, great floods inundated the landing site, located on a rocky plain in an area known today as Ares Vallis. The site is 850 kilometers (527 miles) southeast of the location of Viking Lander 1, which in 1976 became the first spacecraft to land on Mars. Pathfinder is the first to land on Mars since the twin Viking landers arrived almost 20 years ago.

Soon after we landed, NASA called us and asked if we'd make a Virtual Reality Tour of the landing site. Of course we said "yes!" and they sent us the panoramic image... NASA is still using it on their web site.

NASA selected an ancient flood plain (see above image) as the landing site for the 1997 mission of Mars Pathfinder, one of the first in a new generation of small, low-cost spacecraft. To learn more about Mars click here.
